The origin is not known. According to the record of Edo period, there were 44 halls of Rokusainenbutsu under the Obama Ganshoji (Rokusan hall, Nenbutsu practise hall). Now there are still more than 30 halls in Wakasa province.

The Rokusainenbutsu of Okukubodani would be held every month from 16th of January until 14th of October. In this ceremony, Amida Buddha would be prayed in front of the rolling of "Namu-amida-butsu". Compare with other place where only prayed during the Bon festival or when someone died, chanting the Buddhist invocation on the 14th every month has often told the religion courtesy as Rokusainenbutsu, and the neighbourhood has few similar cases. Three men who have drums dance with two or three men's gongs. There are Jyurokusai, Nijyurokusai and Sanjyurokusai in dances and these are played by elementary students, junior high school students and high school students. It used to be played by only boy, but now girls has also participated

Basically the costume is casual, but some ceremonies which would be held in 17th of August and beginning of September would be influenced by the modern festival as a show, children wear yellow Kanban and bamboo hat and adults wear the clothes and mask of Tengu, Hyottoko and Okame. Sanjyurokusai which played by adults is an unusual dance and there is also what is considered to be the condition of a whistle of Kagura court dance and music in this dance. It considers that the Rokusainenbutsu created original folk performing arts from modern times on the origin at the beginning of modernization, and a similar case is seldom seen in the neighbourhood.
