What is the cultural property?

The cultural property is "Valuable property that is born in a long history of our country, brought up, and defends until today and has told". The building, the sculpture of the temple and the Shinto shrine, the painting, the document, the festivals (folk customs event), ruins, and a valuable animal and the plants, etc. are indicated.

In Cultural Properties Protection Law, "Cultural property" is defined as follows.

1. It is a building, a painting, a sculpture, a craft goods, a book mark, Tenseki, an old document, other material cultural products, and the history material with high one that value in the art in history is high for our country (These one is done on earth, the value is included, and formed land and other articles are included) and value in the archeological specimens and other science. (Hereafter, it is said, "Tangible cultural properties".)
2. It is a play, music, a craft technology, other intangible cultural products, and the one that value in the art in history is high for our country. (Hereafter, it is said, "Intangible cultural properties".)
3. Food, clothing, and housing, the occupation, beliefs, annual events regarding to the folk customs and public entertainments, and it is said to be necessary for the understanding of the transition of the life of our people such as clothes, the apparatus used, and other house articles (Hereafter, it is said, "folk cultural properties".)
4. It is the one which is valuable in science in history for our country, such as shell mound, an old tomb, a Miyakonojo mark, ruins of a castle, an old house and other ruins. It is the one which is valuable in appreciation in the art for our country, such as a garden, a bridge, a beach, a gorge in mountains and other place of scenic beauty ground. It is the one which is valuable in science for our country, such as an animal which the habitat, the breeding ground, and the introduction ground are included, a plant which the natural growth ground is included, a geological feature where the phenomenon of peculiar nature is caused is included. (Hereafter, it is said, "Commemoration thing".)
5. It is the one with high value in traditional Group of Monuments where the surrounding environment is done on earth and a historical scenic beauty is formed. (Hereafter, it is said, "Traditional Groups of buildings".)



Specified cultural property and registered cultural property

In the idea of the preservation of cultural properties, there is a system "Specified cultural property" that the country, administrative divisions, and cities, towns, and villages are specified the especially important one and protected. Moreover, the concept "Registration cultural property" arose newly recently Heisei 9. This is the system of a different idea from past "Specified cultural property" and it is to register and protect only the building of tangible cultural properties by the country.

It is a system that can use the cultural property freely to some degree so far, compared with "Cultural property specification system" which protects an important cultural asset strictly.

Three buildings are registered in the country as "registered cultural property" in the Obama city.
