There are two types of the western folding screen, one describes the western customs and another describes a map, this folding screen of course belongs to the later. It is rather for the decoration of a room than for a map.

It is 86.1cm long and 58.2cm wide, and both are 8 pieces together. It has colourful gold screen. About the Japanese map, the coast of Kyushu, Shikoku island and western part of Honshu, was described realistically and there are name of place written such as Nagasaki or Nakoshi. However, the coast of north-eastern area of Honshu and Hokkaido was described roughly.

About the worldwide map, the map was drawn in centre and the scale of the equator is carried out to 1 longitude, and it is divided by the red line every 10 more degrees. It is much more beautiful than the one of Japanese map.

According to the book "Nanbanbyoubu Sekaizunokenkyu" written by Taku Nakamura, there are only 20 pieces of western folding screens which describes the worldwide map in Japan, and also only 13 pieces of the one which describes the Japanese map. Most of them were made in Edo period and there are only 4 pieces made in earlier than Edo period. These western folding screens are one of them.

It is unknown what brought them to him, but it is said that it was brought when the ancestor of Owner did the shipping business in Shiogama area.
