This Kyobako is the two step box which black lacquer painted on base with gold inlay and 35.6cm long, 22.2cm wide and 14.8cm in height. The Kyobako is originally used for putting Kyoten and the cover design which has something to do with buddhism often is used.

However, even though this box was made in Japan, the cover designs are Chinese style such as Rengekayou( the pond with lotus flowers), water and cloud. It is because that Chinkin(lacquer ware with gold inlay) became very popular in China during 10th to 14th century and the Chinkin technique was also used for this box. It may have been made just after this technique was transferred and before original Japanese design began.

Chinkin is the technique in general which engraves with a pattern linear with a sword the surface of the Japanese lacquer and rubs in gold dust with a lacquer into the line, and expresses a pattern.

It is clear that there is a copy of Hokkekyo which Nissyun copied in Kanei 7(1630) and it was put into this box in Edo period, as the notice says.

The colouring of lacquer is fading out, but the design is still shining.
