The Kumiya family was the biggest wealthy merchant in Obama. It had followed Toyotomi, Asano, Kyogoku and Sakai families as the proprietor of a manor and would have extensive dealings with them.

During the time Nagamasa Asano was the proprietor, the Kumiya family had been a wealthy merchant and had engaged to the business which to carry rice, soybeans to Kyusyu Nagoya for the attacking Korea in Bunroku 1(1592). This writing is the famous one which was sent to an attendant of Hideyoshi and it tells his Asia rule design. It also tells that Ruson bottles were sold to the families who would follow Tokugawa family and rice made in Tsugaru would be transferred to Nanbu or Obama ports.

Since the time Takatsugu Kyogoku was the proprietor, the Kumiya family became a local administrator and had a control to Onyu and Ooi area. Also it was given the right to collect rice or money from other merchant in Obama.

After Tadakatsu Sakai came to Obama Han, the Kumiya family continued to had the existing rights. There is a writing kept which tells some Samurai borrowed rice from the Han in Houreki 10, 11(1760, 1761). There is also other writing which tells the situation of a big fire in Kyoto, the money policy of Meiji new government, other small or big events. These are precious data which show the situation of commerce in Obama, politics and so on.
