Tadakatsu was born in Nishio, Mikawa province in Tensho 15(1578) and followed Ieyasu Tokugawa with his father, Tadatoshi and achieved his first fight in the war of Sekigahara. He become a page of Iemitsu Tokugawa in Genna 6(1620) and become a Daimyo given ten thousand Koku in Fukatani, Musashi province in Genna 8. When Iemitsu become the Shogun in Genna 9(1623), he also become a Rojyu in Kanei 1(1624). He inherited father's domain and moved to Kawagoe in Kanei 4. In kanei 11(1634), 113500 Koku, including Wakasa, Tsurugagun in Echizen province and Takashimagun in Oumi province, was given to him and he first visited Wakasa province in August, same year.
After that, he had built the basement of Wakasa Han which would last 14 generations for 235 years. However, his staying was very short. He must have been busy as he became a Tairo in Kanei 15.
He yielded the headship of the family to his son, Tadanao in Meireki 2(1656) and he shaved his head and named Kuin himself in Banji 3(1660). He passed away at the age of 76 in Kanbun 2(1662).
He demonstrated rather the administration skill which stood high as a bureaucrat who served both the generals of Iemitsu and Ietsuna as a military man. He also had a good relationship with high priests like Tenkai and was so faithful that he donated to build Manpukuji in Kyoto and one thousand Ryo. This portrait was drawn by Ingen who founded Oubaku sect.
It is 127.0cm long and 57.0cm wide and painted on silk. It is unknown when it was drawn. But Tadanao asked Eishin Kano to draw a painting in Banji 3, thus, it would be considered that it was drawn when Tadakatsu shaved his head. It is precious as an only portrait which expressed splendidly the looks of his later years which carried through his convictions of simple and reliable.
