It is said that a long time ago, a phoenix would fly to this place and dropped a its feather, thus this temple was named "Houjyusan Hagaji". The old temple which Gyoki found by the order of an emperor used to have 18 buildings. However, there are only the main hall and the object of worship.

The main hall was repaired in September Showa 47 and become the one as it used to at rebuilt in Bunan 4(1447).

It is 13.74m wide, 14.63m long and 13.21m in height. It is not ashamed at all of the name "an old temple" as each part is Japanese style, the beauty of the softness of the slope of a roof with Hinoki tree's surfaces and the line of the circumference of eaves.

There are temples which separated annual with the sufficient degree, Myorakuji in Heian period, Myotsuji in Kamakura period, Hagaji and Hanjyoji in the middle of Muromachi period and Jinguji in the end of Muromachi period.
