Shimofunazuka Kofun

Monuments (historical sites) / Wakasa / 【Collective term of cultural properties】Kaminaka ancient burial mounds

This ancient burial mound in Shimofunazuka in Hikasa area is located to the north of ex-national road (Wakasa-kaido Road) and is oriented in almost the same direction as
Kamifunazuka ancient burial mound. The total length is about 85m and the diameter of the back circular part is about 47m. The height from the surface of the rice field is about 10m and the front square part is fairly low with the height of about 8.5m from the surface of the rice field surrounding it. The width of this tumulus is about 47m. The structure of this tumulus is a little different from that of Kamifunazuka burial mound and quite similar to that of Jounotsuka burial mound in Wakibukuro ancient burial mounds. Pieces of clay dolls called Haniwa has been excavated from the reclaimed area of the moat surrounding it. However, Fuki-ishi, or the stones covering the surface of the mound, have not been discovered. This ancient burial mound was constructed in the mid Kofun period and it is designated as a national historical site.
