Hotokedani Obama city
(now kept in Wakasa Museum of History)
Hotokedani ku
This statue is the old seated statue. The head and body parts were engraved with one piece of tree which might be Hinoki tree and other parts would be put together. The face is rather flat, but engraved eyes and thick chest are seem to be calm. It is presumed to be made in last half of 10th century to 11th century, the middle stage of Heian period.
There are many statues of Buddhism made after the middle of Heian period, such as the wooden seated statue of Kannonbosatsu kept in Chokeiin in Katsumi area in Uchitomi district. These statues would tell that there used to be many statues produced in Wakasa province, and it would be a precious data which tells the history of faith in Hotokedani area.
