This remain is located on 1km west along with the national highway No.27 from Kinki Expressway Tsuruga Sen' Obamanishi interchange. It faces the beautiful shore of Aoto, just fronts on the Aoba mountain, also called "Wakasa Fuji", which was an object of Waka in Manyosyu.
The investigations were held in Showa 53 and in Showa 54. There are about 60 remains of salt making places in Wakasa province and here is in the best state of preservation as registered National cultural property with the one in Kihe island in Kagawa prefecture.
The place was used during the last stage of Tumulus period to Nara period and the periods which these earthenware made would belong to both Hamane UB style including Okozu style, and Funaoka style. There are 9 remains of salt making fireplaces which covered with stones, and these belongs to Hamane UB style(1 to 4) and Funaoka style(5 to 9). More over, there is the remains of shore embankment, located about 20m inside from now day's sea shore, and the corner of burned ground, which the purpose is unknown.
The salt made in Wakasa province was sent to Nara, where used to be the capital of Japan at that time, as Tax. This fact was written in the invoices which were unearthed on Fujiwarakyo or Heijyokyo.
