It is said that the silk coloured portrait of Kouhou holy priest was drawn by Shinnyo Shinno and it has been kept as the treasure.
Shinnyo Shinno was the third son of Heijyo emperor and became the disciple of Kukai Zen priest after the Kusuko revolt(810).
The portrait of Koubou holy priest kept in Kouyasan was drawn by Shinnyo Shinno and is said to be the origin of the portrait of Koubou, as counted one of the eight Shingon origin (Ryumou in India, Ryuchi, Kongouchi, Fukuu, Zenmui, Ikkou in China, Eika, and Houkou in Japan).
It is the 142cm long, 125cm wide and the masterpiece made in middle stage of Kamakura period following the old style correctly. Some parts have been repaired, but it is still well-maintained drawing.
According to the temple's history, this temple was built in Yoro era, and there used to have 12 buildings by the order of Gokougouin, then it was suffered from a fire in March, Bunmei 16(1484) and the portrait of Koubou holy priest was also burned down. Then, the another portrait of Koubou holy priest which had been kept in Kouyasan was moved to the temple in June, Bunmei 16. There is the writing written by Chosei of Kougouhoujinanin which telling this fact.
