The shrine is located north-northwest from Iwai village at the place of about 1.6km. It was built on the small flat place in front of a big cave on cliff of Iimori Mountain. There is a big tree of Tochi in front of the shrine.
According to the Nakanatakyoudoshi, Tamuramaro Sakanoue repaired the shrine in Enryaku 17(798). Woman would be allowed to climb up as a statue of Jyuichimenkannon was donated in Tencho 3(826). The origin of the shrine might have come from the primitive faith as the rock became the object of worship, then, people built a hat, putting a statue and make it the object of worship. Especially in middle stage of Heian period, the transaction of Kumano belief made people build the shine.
There are many shrine located on foot of the mountains, but it is the only
shrine located in the cave deep inside of a mountain. It is the good sample
which shows the changes from the primitive faith to now day's shrine.
