It is 94cm in height and made with one piece of Boku tree. The technique of engraving is brilliant, as soft body and thin clothes, it is absolutely realistic. It is the one-piece-statue which was popular in last stage of Kamakura period or the period of South and North dynasties. The stage was made later in Edo period.
It is said that the Kannondo is one of the building of Chotakiji, which located in the precincts of the Kumano shrine and this statue was made for the main object of worship of that temple.
According to the origin of the temple, when Taicho holy priest visited here and saw the waterfall, he said that this view is as marvelous as the one of Nachi and stayed 17 days for practising. While he was staying here, he engraved the statue of Jyuichimenkannon and built a nice building to locate it.
Since then, it was closed. The building was also moved 0.5km down from the waterfall.
