Daruma was the holy Zen priest in China who was the first origin of Zen sect and the member of Zensyurokuso(Daruma, Eka, Sousan, Doushin, Kounin, Enou). He was born in India as a son of king. He went to China and propagated Zen in Shaolin Temple. It is said that his hand and legs were collapsed because of the heavy ascetic practices, he had practiced Zen meditation facing a wall for 9 years. And Eka was finally allowed to become his disciple after he also cut his both hands. There are many portrait based on these stories.
The Zen which was transferred to Japan was belonged to Nanzen which Enou, the sixth generation, started and lead to Rinzai Zen or Soutou Zen. Because of these, these holy Zen priests also became faithfull in Japan.
In this portrait, he wore the Noue decorated Enzan and sit on Kyokuroku making the sign of Zenteiin.
It is considered to be drawn in the period of North and South dynasties and others portraits of Zensyurokuso might have been drawn also.
It is 220.6cm long and 124.1cm wide. This silk might have been imported because the size was so big.
This temple has other treasures which has something to do with Chinese
Buddhism as the founder of this temple was Dainen Houen who was the disciple
of Jikusen Bonsen( the priest from China).
