The Jyokouji is the old temple found in Kanei 7(1630) and keeps the portrait of Jyoukouin, a letter, the graveyard. And these paintings show the prosperity at these days.
The main hall of the temple was suffered from a fire and collapsed in Taisho 12(1923) and there were only a room of Shoin and a Kori left. Above more there was a fire again in Showa 39(1964) and the main gate was burned down. However, these revived in Heisei 13(2001).
The walls of Okunoma in the room of Shoin are the paintings. The front wall is 253cm long and 278cm wide and the side walls are 80cm deep.
The artist is Kanou Shikibukyouhougan Dousyun Fujiwara Yoshinobu. Dousyunyoshinobu's usual name is Sanshiro and his first name is Yoshinobu. He was given a rank of Shikibukyouhougan.
There was Douunmasunobu who was an adopted child of famous Tanyuu and Yoshinobu was the fourth generations of Douunmasuhobu. Thus, he was a painter of Surugadaikanou group and the leading painter of middle of Edo period.
You may realise the changes of style, compare with the culture of Momoyama, such as the paintings of Eitoku or Tanyuu which were absolutely gorgeous. The style of painting is very simple. This is the special feature of Surugadai. These paintings are full of taste, not gorgeous, not soft.
