The Buddhist memorial service would have been held everywhere on the day "Nehane" which the Buddha died.

Nehanzu is the drawing which describes the time when the Buddha passes away. After finishing the 45 years of teaching Buddhism, it got an illness and lay down on the Shoza under the Sharasoujyu trees, waiting the last time of its life quietly.

It lies down using its right hand as a pillow, it turns to west as head turns to north, arranged both legs. This style is a second style which started in Kamakura period.

This drawing carefully describes the Bosatsu who watches calmly its last time, ten disciples and animals who are so sad.

The drawing also describes the wife of Maya who coming down from the heaven and the old woman of Bisharijyo who puts the hand on the Buddha's leg. It is also a famous scene that Anan falls down and woman pours water.

The Buddha was painted on gold paint. Bosatsu faces are painted white and Rakans are painted red. In total, it is not exaggerated so much.

This drawing contained of three silk sheet and is rather small sized, 164.0cm long and 118.0cm wide. It is considered to be drawn in the period of North and South Dynasties.
