Kusuya shrine is the old shrine which was written in Enkisikijinmeicho( one of the 927 selected shrines) and located in beautiful village of Katsumi. It was also selected as one of the ten big shrine of Wakasa province in Kamakura period.
The origin of this forest is not known. There is a big rock in the middle of the mountain of Kusuyadake and it is said that this rock is the rock which the god (Oonamochinokami) would have descend to. The forest called Eboshinomori begins round there and killing has been strictly forbidden in the forest.
There are Japanese cedar trees beside a long approach, but there are also zelkova trees, Mukuroji and Inumaki around the approach. Inside the precincts of the shrine, there are Sudajii, Yabutsubaki and Kanawarabi. It is great contrast Big tree of Shii and Kanawarabi. Behind the main hall which make us imagine of ancient festival ruins, there are Yabutsubaki and Tabunoki. High trees are Tabunoki, Sudajii and zelkova trees. Second high trees are Yabutsubaki, zelkova trees, Shirakashi and Urajigrogashi. Lower trees are Yabutsubaki, Inumaki, Tabunoki and Aoki. On the ground, there are Kanawarabi, Ryoumensida and Aoki.
Here is the northeast limit of plant distribution of Inumaki.
There is the forest of Wakasahime shrine in the city and it is precious
data to watch the nature in the city.
