A long time ago during Nara period, a Chinese ship was washed up on a Yashiro shore. There were a princess and 8 attendants in the ship. They got so tired because of long journey and they had no food any more. They could only ask for foods but they could not understand any Japanese. However, there were so much money and treasures in the ship, local people killed them without realising it using Kine. Since then, people who live in Yashiro area has comforted their soul and has performed the festival Tekinematsuri for fear of Heaven's Vengeance. It is said that the festival has never been cancelled ever since Heian period.
The person who organises this festival has to purify himself, bathing cold water on New Year's Day and also has to be responsible any religious events for one year.
There are five kinds of players of a festival procession. One person to shake Tekine stick, and two people to have a bow and an arrow, and one person to be an attendant and one person to be a tragic princess. The three person who shakes Tekine stick has a bow and an arrow, They who played the role of a strange figure act slaughter putting leaves of a fern on hut and paint the face black. In contrast, the girls who do not yet know impurity are covered with the hood imitated in golden bag and appear. This festival would be held every April 3rd.
The head of a household, the oldest son and the daughters in Yashiro ku
have to get involved in this festival.
