The fortune-telling of year called Kaminomiyanojinji was originally the hidden Shinto ritual in the forest of Miyanomori and is considered to be started at the ancient times.
This event is held every January 16th in the lunar calendar. People who is a part of this ritual get together on appointed time and put seven staff, Tokoro, Kuri(chestnut), Shii(chinquapin), Hoshigaki(dried persimmon), Ginnan(ginkgo nut), Donguri(acorn), Kayanomi(torreya nut) into the small box sized 10cm in height, 20cm wide and having 13 holes. When they put them into the box, they also put two rice cakes called "cow tongue".
They would pray having the box, offering gifts, bows and arrows to shimonomiya. Then, on the way to Kaminomiya, they would shoot the bow. They would pray and offer with the gifts and the box. After having a Mikisyu, they would take off an upper part of stone room( about 50cm deep) made with natural stones under an old zelkova tree and take the last year's box off and put the this year's box into the stone room. They cleanse the stone room by pouring the Mikisyu, they would put the upper part of stone room again.
They go back to the shrine and open the last year's box for fortune-telling. The pattern of how these seven staff would sprout up tells this year's harvest.
According to Syajiyuisyoki, it is written that Kaminomiya is the god of mountain. These seven staff is all favourite food for the god of mountain. Thinking that these seven staff had been important vegetables for Japanese since Jyomon period until modern times, it must be a simple and primitive ritual.
