The Shomu emperor ordered to build Kokubunji every country in Tenpei 13(741). About Wakasa Kokubunji, investigation which reached in three years was performed. In the result, it was clear that there was a ruin of Kokubunji. The precincts of the Kokubunji was Hounicho(230m) and the line of the land adjustment which remains in the Onyu area and the line of the precincts are same. There used to be a Nandaimon, Nakamon, Kondo, Koudo located on one line and a tower was also located on east side.
About Nandaimon and Nakamon, only the basements were found. Kondo was located where Shaka-hall located now on and it was 21.6m long and 15m deep. Basement was 21.9m in north-south and 28.8m in east-west. There were two steps in from of Kondo and the 1m wide east-west approaches of gravel were extended to Nakamon, an inner gate. The feature of this Kokubunji was that the size was rather small, there were two round ancient tombs, 50m wide, in southeast side of the tower. It is a few example that there is an ancient tomb in the precincts of a Kokubunji and there are few excavations of a tile and a tower and a do have a strong possibility that it was not tile-roofing. Moreover, from the southeast part of a tower, the sourin made from gilt bronze is unearthed 30 points, and is nationally precious data.
