The famous Unose River (Onyu river) starts from this mountain of Hyakurigadake(931m). It is the highest mountain in Wakasa province as the border to Shiga prefecture and the rhododendrons places on north side of the mountain.
Here mountainside has many rock faces and cliffs, and is making the steep incline. However, in summer, there becomes a flower garden as the rhododendron has red flowers.
There are many rhododendrons placed on border to tanba province or Eisyu, so called "Nougonhakuzansankei". The special feature of rhododendrons in natasho village is that the circumference of a tree is large. The special feature of here is that there are millions of rhododendrons.
The largest circumference of a root is 68cm, there are big trees everywhere, such as the circumference of a branch is 40 cm or 60cm.
Ieyasu Tokugawa who went to subjugate Asakura family in Echizen province from the Wakasa way as one general of Nobunaga Oda passed along this valley on the return way. This is so called "Haribatakegoe".
There are two type of "Syakunage" rhododendron, one is "Hon-Syakunage"
and another is "Tsuku-Syakunage". Here's is former one and supposed
to be the northeast point.
