Kanaya area used to be the centre of casters since middle age in Wakasa
province. It lasted until modern times under the protection of governors
in Wakasa Han.
The last work was the production of bell for Myoganji in Showa 35. There
is a ruin of Fukiya and are many documents and tools for the casting kept
in the Owner's house. The highlight of the tools is the moulds of a temple's
bell, a pot and a Bunmawashi of a pot. In some tools, there are records
of year, such as in Houei 6(1709), in Kyoho 2(1717), in Tenmei 6(1786)
also 8(1788). The main products became usual stuff for days such as a pot
after Meiji period and there are also many tools kept. They went to sell
these products to everywhere in Wakasa province when off season of agricultural
work.
There are writings which one is about the protection of Takeda families, the protector in Wakasa province in Muromachi period, one is the regulation of caster in Bunka 5(1808) and also one is that they produced the lantern for the dynasty family. These are the documents of middle age until modern times.
The oldest record about the casting in Kanaya is written in 4th rolls
of Wakasagunkenshi, the bell for Hachiman shrine made in Ouei 4(1397).
However, this bell doesn't exist now. The existing sample is the bell for
Hie shrine and it was made in Keicyo 17(1612), the caster's name is Kurozaemon
Kanaya Daikushita. There is a name written " Sakon Kanaya Daiku Onyushita"
in Ouei 11(1404) on the bell kept in Isanae shrine in Ooi town. |
