Senjyukannon is one of the oldest Bosatsu faithful as well as Jyuichimenkannon
since Nara period, having one thousand hands with one thousand eyes and
saves people.
Its form should be so complicated because it has one thousand hands,
thus most of them became to have simply 42 shoulders. And there are some
type of having small faces on head, some of them have 27 faces, 24 faces
or eleven faces.
In this drawing, it has totally 24 faces, two faces with three eyes (one is mercy and another is angry face) beside the main face and seven faces on three lines above the main face, and one more face on the top. It has also totally 40 hands (except the main hands), one has a statue of Buddha, one has a red lotus flower, another has a purple lotus flower which originally both hands should be constructed in front of its belly.
Body is coloured with gold paints and lines are red. Cutting gold is
used for cloths. There used to be a Mandala back of it, but now separated
and fell. And there is a cloud above it and moon is also described.
It is considered to be made in Kamakura period, but because of the unusual
contents, it has a strange atmosphere in this drawing. It is 98.5cm long
and 38.5cm wide.
Matokuji has few unusual drawings such as Fudousandojizo and this drawing.
