It is said that Monjyubosatsu is the most intelligent person of Buddha’s disciples, and famous for the server as well as Fugenbosatsu who rides on an elephant. It rides on Shishi, and the child form using its hair ornament (single, 5th, 6th and 8th ornaments) is the special feature, but other forms, such as a baby or bushtit priest, are also quite common too.
It is a child Bosatsu with 5th hair ornaments in this drawing, face is
childish but valiant, body is rather plump. It has a lotus flower in the
left hand and a roll in the right hand. The decoration of cloths is definitely
influenced by Chinese drawings.
There are Shiteno in back of Monjyubosatsu, Jikokuten in right down,
Zoucyoten in left down, Koumokuten in upper left, Tamokuten in upper right
side.
There is a Tengai above Monjyubosatsu, above more there are 9 stars. These 9 stars are the big dipper and Ragosei and Keitosei. There is Mokuyo (formed as a government official) in centre, Nichiyo and Getuyo are both side above Mokuyo, Suiyo and Kinyo are both side down Mokuyo, there is Kayo (ungly man), Doyo (an old man) ,Ragosei and Keitosei in both corner.
It is 130.0cm long and 45.9cm wide, drawn on rather rough silk. It is
a rare mandala that Monjyubosatsu and 9 stars were drawn together, trying
new style based on old style. Thus, it is considered to have been drawn
in middle of Kamakura period and it is one of the superior works kept in
Mantokuji.
