Wakasahime shrine is called as Shimonogu and the God, Wakasahimedaijin,
is Hougyokuhimenomikoto who is famous as a Otohime of Ryugu. It was built
in Yoro 5(721).
There are Japanese Cedar trees, Ginkgo trees, Muku and Tabunoki in precincts
of the shrine. Once you come into this shrine, you will feel solemn.
There is a big tree of Ogatamanoki, 18.50m in height, 2.08m in the circumference
of a trunk, 11m wide in east and west, 11.20m in north and south and it
is the city cultural property.
This tree is one of Magnolia, grows in warm or subtropical zone. The
colour of tree skin is dark green and smooth, leaf is ellipse form and
shinny skin. It has white and good smell flowers in spring.
There are some sayings for origin of the name "Ogatama". One is that inviting a god with this branch is called as Ogatatematsuru, the other comes from Ogatama (small fragrant wooden fruit).
This tree was sent by Gosyo( Japanese emperor) in Meiji period. It was
when the Guji was Mr. Mitsuaki kan who was trusted by Meiji emperor.
