The stone pagoda of Ichi is the one of the biggest pagoda in Japan, 3.5
m in height, almost in complete condition located in the precincts of Saihouji
temple. The splendid decoration of Futaku tells us the people's faith as
long as Ichigami(Ebisu god) and a strong will of Sayacyoa who built it
in 1358.
The person who built the stone pagoda was Garakusai Nagai who stayed
in Obama city as a governor in Nanboku period. However, he ordinated into
priesthood suddenly because of the conflict of the Northern and Southern
Dynasties changed the name to Cyoa and built the Saihouji as changing the
name to Cyoa. He made a great effort to repair of Haga temple which was
terribly broken of the conflict.
It is not offcially known where it used to be, but it is believed that
the stone pagoda was moved to Ichiba area at the same time of the completion
of Tsutsunuke, upper and down Ichiba town in Keicho 12(1607) by the order
of Takatsugu Kyogoku and also the completion of the shrine of Ebisu. In
Kanei 3(1626) there was a Noh held. But it was again moved to Eisankomichi
in fron of Hachiman shrine and there was a festival on every January 31st.
Then, it was finally moved to Wakuri area.
This stone pagoda is a story teller of Obama's history.
