Fudomyoo S59. March 2nd, Prefecture Cultural Property
Two children portrait S51. January 22nd, City Cultural Property
Nodai, Obama city
Myorakuji (Shingon sect, Koyasan)
This portrait is three sheets, Fudomyoo, two children as Kongara and
Seitaka, and is one set. Fudomyoo comes the centre, Kongara comes the right
side and Seitaka goes to the left side. The sheets are 115 cm long and
38.5cm wide.
A quite elaborate technique called Saikin-gihou, to cut a foil of gold
and silver first and put as cloths, decoration staffs and stage, is used
in the portrait of Fudomyoo. This technique is often used for Buddhism
portraits. The lines and colouring are quite superior, and because it is
used as an object of practicing portrait such a long time, damage became
seriously. Thus, it was repaired in Heisei 6(1994). Kongara and Seitaka's
portraits are simple but well-balanced and well-maintained. These two children
are famous for the server of Fudomyoo.
At the top of the sheet of Fudomyoo, 9 lines poem is written and also written; In shitoku 3(1386) May 28th, written by Syusaibonka and at the bottom of the sheet, there is also written; written by Myosai. The person called Syusai was a holly priest, famous for the 47th leader of Kennaji and died in 1388. However nothing is left about Myosai. Apparently these three sheets are the works of Nanbokucyo period but it is not clear why these came to this temple.
