It is said that in 719, the priest Gyoki climbed up this mountain, while
he was travelling Wakasa province, he engraved the statue having one thousand
hands and one thousand eyes and put into the cave. It used to be a hidden
statue and we could only see in every 33 years.
It is 176.3cm in height and has 24 faces including two side faces on
head, which is a very few sample as a statue having one thousand hands.
It forms as a human being and made with one piece of Hinoki wood. It
is a old style of statue, and it is considered that it was made in middle
stage of Heian period, around 10 or 11 century.
It is normally called Sanmensenjyu( three faces and one thousand hands)
which having two side faces like this and we can see some samples which
made in 9 century. However, it is very few that it has 24 faces.
