It is the wooden statue of Jizobosatsu, as a City Cultural Property,
which is located in the main hall of the Enshoji, the temple also famous
for the seated statue of Dainichinyorai and the statue of Fudomyoo.
This statue is 64.8cm in height, eyes are engraved. Jizobosatsu is normally made as a Japanese priest like this statue and has a cane in the right hand and a holly jewel in the left hand.
This statue is the typical type of Bosatsu in the last stage of Heian
period, which expresses the mercy such as a very round and harmonious head,
shallowly engraved eyes, a small mouth and sloping shoulders. This is presumed
to be made in 12th century.
It seems to be so fragile because it is made with many pieces, but it
is scooped out carefully and every pieces are thin. Thus, eyes, nose and
cloths are engraved shallowly.
It is considered that it used to be brilliant coloured, but today we
can see a basement mostly, and red or whitewash in some parts.
