Shirahige Jinja Tumulus

Monuments (historical sites) / Obama / 【Collective term of cultural properties】Kaminaka ancient burial mounds

Shirahige Jinja Tumulus is one of several ancient burial mounds (kofun) that exist in the Wakasa region. It is located just inside the city limits of Obama, to the west of two burial mounds known as Kamifunazuka Tumulus and Shimofunazuka Tumulus. The keyhole-shaped Shirahige Jinja Tumulus dates to the first half of the sixth century and is 58 meters long. The mound was originally covered with stones, lined with ceremonial clay objects called haniwa, and surrounded by a moat, part of which still remains. Shirahige Jinja Shrine was later built on top of the circular section of the kofun, suggesting that the location may have been chosen because it was already considered sacred. Shirahige Jinja Tumulus is designated a Historic Site by Obama City.
