Shiraishi Jinja Shrine

Monuments (historical sites) / Wakasa / 【Collective term of cultural properties】Kumagawa-juku

Shiraishi Jinja Shrine is dedicated to guardian deities of the Kumagawa area. They include Hikohohodemi no Mikoto (a sea deity), Shirahige Myojin (a deity of guidance), various mountain deities, and the enshrined spirit of Sakai Tadakatsu (1587–1662), the first Sakai lord of the Obama domain. Ancient documents indicate that the deities were transferred here for worship from the Onyu district of Wakasa or from Ise in Mie Prefecture.

The annual festival of Shiraishi Shrine is held on May 3rd. A float decorated with a luxurious tapestry in the style of the famous Gion Festival of Kyoto is paraded through the streets, reflecting how culture in Kumagawa-juku post town was influenced by the lively and extravagant lifestyle, traditions, and rituals brought from the former capital. Three early nineteenth-century tapestries once used in the festival are a designated Tangible Cultural Property of Fukui Prefecture.
